Updated, February 2024: Pastor Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church was in the news in early 2024, after Osteen tearfully addressed his congregation, announcing that the church had paid off a $100 million Bank Of America loan.
Accompanied by his wife Victoria, Osteen said: "My big announcement today is that [effective] December 31st of [2023], we have officially paid off the $100 million loan."
Osteen spoke of the period before he took out the loan, recalling a time when he was young and overwhelmed by the prospect of renovating Lakewood Church: "I got the bill back for the bids, and it was $100 million to renovate. And I thought, kind of, God, I didn't sign up for this. I was 36 years old. And I thought, but you know what, God gives you grace for every season of your life."
According to Osteen, Lakewood Church was initially refused a loan by an unnamed lender. Bank Of America offered Lakewood Church a $25 million loan, and Osteen said: "I saw that 25 million, I said, 'You’ll let us borrow 25, would you let us borrow $100 million? They said 'we'll do it.' Bank of America loaned us $100 million."
Osteen's Lakewood Church obtained the loan at some point in 2003. When adjusted for inflation, the initial $25 million would be worth $42 million in today's dollars, whereas the $100 million would be equivalent to $168 million.
